“Dancing with lights, I lit her up to paint her into the picture.”
“I had the chance to do a lightpainting / dance project with Mirelle Martins in Sao Paulo. The shoot took place in an occupied house in February 2016. Before the house burned down and the roof collapsed this was the ostentatious great hall of an old and important union building (Associação Auxiliadora das Classes Laboriosas). Imagine union workers gathering to protest on the nearby Praça da Sé.”
“At the time of the shoot the house was occupied by a group of families with children closely guarding the door in the now dangerous part of town. As part of the project “Solario” Mirelle Martins exhibited the pictures on site, shortly before the families were evicted.”
In the “Occupation Dance” series Mirelle Martins is frozen in a jump while the whole movement is captured through the light which she is holding in her hands.
